Description
“French Pronunciation Demystified ” group classes, description:
Have you ever found yourself struggling with French pronunciation, sometimes at the cost of not being understood by French people even for a simple question such as ordering a cup of coffee? Do you sometimes think that understanding Schrödinger equation is easier than trying to pronounce correctly a new French word you just read? Do you find yourself butchering your favourite French song while singing along in your car? While trying to speak French might be a tedious work, there is an easy step-by-step method you can apply at any level to improve your pronunciation. In this class, we’ll study:
1) The rhythm of French language – rhythmic groups : how to link French words together in a group so a sentence is shaped correctly and how to link those different groups together.
2) The music of French language : how to use different intonations to convey different meanings (and, equally important, to avoid misunderstandings).
3) Mute letters : when and how not to pronounce the final -e in a word, when and how not to pronounce a final consonant in a word, when and how not to pronounce an -e in the middle of a word / rhythmic group.
4) Connecting sounds : through studying the enchaînement consonantique (how to link the last consonant of a word to the first vowel of the next one), the enchaînement vocalique (how to link the last vowel of a word to the first vowel of the next word) and the infamous liaison
I’ll also help you understanding the mechanics of French pronunciation: should I put my tongue against my teeth or my palate? Which shape should my mouth have? Should this sound come from my nose or my throat? Where does the air come from and where does it go? Should I show my teeth or not?
