After completing a Master’s degree in French 20 years ago at an American university, I decided to take the DALF C1 and C2 exam to brush up on my French after years of neglect in the hopes of regaining some lost fluency and passing the difficult exam. With 10 months lead-time, I enrolled at Learn French at Home and was able to work via Skype each week with one of their fine French teachers. The teachers are all native French speakers adding to the authenticity of the program. After an initial consultation with Céline, I was matched with Marion.

My teacher has been very helpful and supportive in our weekly Skype sessions.  She assessed my level of knowledge in our first few sessions, and adapted the lessons to build on my strengths and focus on my areas of need.  Each session begins by covering a topic I am dealing with in Lyon — like shopping at the marché, dining at restaurants, making purchases at the boulangerie/traiteur/fromagerie, returning items to shops, the vocabulary of football matches.  Then we review my homework and focus on a new aspect of French grammar or pronunciation.  Each weekly session moves my knowledge of French forward, and increases my confidence in speaking with my neighbors and the business people of Lyon.

Learn French at Home was highly recommended by a friend who has done many different courses in France and in England.  The one to one Skype sessions have been perfect for me.  In group courses I have usually been either the worst in the group or the best – neither ideal for improving  my French.  Audrey is a terrific teacher.  She has guided my learning via conventional exercises, adjusted lessons where I needed to repeat grammatical elements so they “stick”.  She is interested in and knowledgeable about French and international topics so conversation is lively and relevant.  There is a flexibility and intelligence to our lessons that I value highly – and then there’s her patience and her sense of humour.

I suspect what I experience in our lessons is part of the house style of Learn French at Home, but it feels very much a reflection of Audrey’s own capability at a teacher and who she is as a person.  I fear I am not an ideal student – but at the end of each lesson I feel I have learned something important, and that my confidence in comprehension and being able to express what is important to me, in French, has increased. Currently, I’m studying with Caroline.  She is a fantastic teacher.  She is really good at identifying the places where I’m weak and places where I’m strong and adjusting the lessons to fit my current needs. Her corrections are very gentle and she’s extremely encouraging. In the past, I’ve always felt very shy about speaking French with native speakers and that has really slowed my progress. With Caroline’s help, I’m now much more comfortable speaking French and I am using it more and more with my French speaking colleagues and friends.”

My tutor, Virginie is amazing, patient and well-motivated. During the lessons we often have a laugh about life in general.  The lessons are well formatted and have been enjoyable, informative and also very frustrating at times.  Detailed notes from the lesson and homework are emailed to me after the lesson.  Time spent on my homework varies from week to week, and I do value the variation of questions that Virginie sets.

Overall, learning a language via Skype is a great idea and I would thoroughly recommend it to others.  It is certainly a fantastic way to learn another language.”
